Brookhouse Farm Equestrian Centre
About Us

Brookhouse Farm is a family run Riding School situated in a semi rural area on the outskirts of Birmingham, with good road links including accessibility to the motorway network and a nearby train station (Shirley).

We opened the gates of
Brookhouse Farm Riding School in 1985 as a new business where none had existed before. We had approximately 45 acres of Green Belt grazing land which we used for our 3 ponies and the livery of other peoples horses/ponies. There were no buildings at this time, so when we opened the riding school we literally had our 3 ponies, on which we offered instruction and a caravan which we purchased to use as a reception area, but we did a lot of local advertising and the business started to grow. Most of the money earnt over the last 20 years has been re-invested in the Riding School and we now have over 40 horses and ponies, a brick built reception, staffroom, toilets, tack room, twenty four stables plus stalls which offer covered hard standing for all the horses and ponies, a barn, a classroom, tea rooms and two floodlit all weather arena’s for teaching, the smaller of which has recently had new drainage installed and a brand new all weather surface (Jan 09).

In 1990 we were finalists in the small business of the year competition and went on to be runner up.. a very proud moment for the family. The riding school now teaches an age range which extends from 6 years to 76 years, from beginners to more advanced riders and those who have a special interest in dressage or jumping, we also have many riders who have lessons here on their own horses so parking with a trailer is also available.

We hold various events throughout the year, dressage competitions, gymkhana’s, jumping competitions, adult weekends and now we have also introduced regular clinics for XC and SJ and Dressage.. we will be putting our events on the website so keep an eye on the events page for new listings.

More recently…

We have opened a purpose built and landscaped trekking track so that hacks do not contain any road work. The terrain is varied and includes woods and a river trail, with plenty of canters for the more experienced rider and optional cross country jumps. Treks can just be a gentle walk or trot for novices and can include lunch or snacks in the tea rooms.

We have become a Pony Club Centre which is operated under the guidelines of the National Pony Club, and is aimed specifically for children who do not own their own pony so they can enter into competitions, take recognized tests and certificates, and can also study all aspects of husbandry and horses in general. Brookhouse Farm also has links with local equine colleges, veterinary schools and local secondary schools and regularly takes working pupils and work experience students.

Watch Yourself clinics -

Have you ever wondered what you look like when you're riding or thought to yourself when someone says heels down, “they are down!”? - then a watch yourself clinic is just what you need! The idea is simple, we will video you riding for an hour and then we will go to the tea room and watch the session back whilst tucking into a cake or two and some refreshment. We can then analyse the session together, whilst at first you may think
“oh dear – that’s awful” it is a wonderful thing to be able to see for yourself; what your trainer sees from the ground both weaknesses and strengths; as believe it or not - it's not all bad!!
